The Art and Science of Astrophotography
Objects in the night sky such as nebulas, star clusters and galaxies not only inspire scientific and intellectual curiosity, they are worthy of deep aesthetic appreciation; awe inspiring forms produced by physical forces difficult for the human mind to grasp.
Robert Burnham said it best when describing the Star Queen Nebula: “In the vast reaches of the Universe, modern telescopes reveal many vistas of unearthly beauty and wonder… so perfectly evokes the very essence of celestial vastness and splendor, indefinable strangeness and mystery, the instinctive recognition of a vast cosmic drama being enacted, of a supreme masterwork of art being shown.”
The images presented here are the product of the Covington Observatory. State of the art telescopes, mounts, digital cameras and software are used to produce the images presented here. While a great deal of scientific expertise and engineering make the images possible, please enjoy the images for what they are intended…artistic expression.
